A lot of us enjoy a weekend lie-in, especially after a busy work week.

And new research has indicated hitting snooze on your Saturday and Sunday alarms can prove beneficial to your health – fending off high blood pressure and improving heart health.

Researchers at Korea University have discovered having an extra one hour and 27 minutes of sleep at the weekend can help maintain a healthy blood pressure – with sleeping this extra time lowering your chances of developing high blood pressure, or hypertension, by nine per cent.

The study, which assessed 41,000 adults over a seven-year-period, considered how much ‘catch-up’ sleep participants had on Saturdays and Sundays, alongside their blood pressure and how much exercise they did.

The findings were presented at the European Society of Cardiology’s conference, held in Munich, where the researchers said people should not feel ‘lazy or guilty’ for indulging in their weekend lie-ins.

Dr Nawton Lee said a lack of sleep can put ‘extra stress’ on the body, keeping the heart and blood vessels ‘working harder’ and increasing blood pressure.

‘Getting some extra sleep on the weekend may give the body a chance to recover and reduce some of that stress,’ Dr Lee said, ‘People should not feel lazy or guilty for sleeping a little longer on the weekend.’

The study found that participants who had any degree of extra sleep at the weekend were six per cent less likely to develop high blood pressure.

Researchers at Korea University have discovered having an extra one hour and 27 minutes of sleep at the weekend can help maintain a healthy blood pressure

Participants who were physically inactive saw a greater benefit, reducing their risk of hypertension by 6.9 per cent.

Approximately one in three British adults suffers from high blood pressure, with the average adult recording six to 6.4 hours of sleep per night – considerably lower than the NHS recommended seven to nine hours.

However, the research did find that those who recorded more than four hours of extra sleep at the weekend did put themselves at a larger risk of high blood pressure.

Dr Lee said that when ‘catch-up’ sleep does become excessive, the ‘degree of sleep irregularity and circadian disruption may increase, which could offset that benefit’.

Dr Sonya Babu-Narayan, clinical director at the British Heart Foundation and a consultant cardiologist, told The Times: ‘Many of us struggle to get enough sleep during the week due to work, family and social commitments, so it’s natural if we find ourselves enjoying a lie-in at the weekend in an effort to catch up on missed sleep.

‘This study is not a green light for physical activity to take a back seat, but for now perhaps we don’t need to feel guilty about getting up late at the weekend.’
