Finland school shooting LIVE: Three children aged 12 wounded in classroom rampage before gunman, also 12, is arrested

• One child has died and two others are seriously injured after the school shooting.
• Police have said they are investigating one murder and two counts of attempted murder.

• The suspected shooter is a 12-year-old boy, MTV Uutisten report police as saying.

• Finland tightened its gun legislation in 2010 following two deadly school shootings in 2007 and 2008.
• It introduced an aptitude test for all firearms licence applicants and changed the age limit for applicants to 20 from 18.

• Interior Minister Mari Rantanen said on X: ‘The day started in a horrifying way… I can only imagine the pain and worry that many families are experiencing at the moment. The suspected perpetrator has been caught.’

• In a statement, Finland’s Prime Minister Petteri Orpo said: ‘The shooting scene in Vantaa deeply shocks. My thoughts are with the victims, their loved ones and the other students and staff of Viertola school. We are following the situation closely and are waiting for updated information from the authorities.’

• In 2007, an 18-year-old student shot dead seven students and his head teacher in and incident known as the Jokela High School massacre.
• Gunman Pekka-Eric Auvinen then shot himself and later died in hospital.
• Months later in 2008, another shooting occurred at a university in the town of Kauhajoki.
• The gunman, 22-year-old student Matti Juhani Saari, shot and killed ten people. He also shot himself and later died in hospital.
• Gun laws were tightened in the wake of the shootings.

Anna-Maja Henriksson said on X: ‘Terrible news from Vantaa. We are following the situation carefully. Our thoughts are with the injured and their relatives as well as all those affected.’

• According to Finnish police, all those involved in the shooting incident are 12-year-old students.
• The police corrected the previous information they shared, earlier stating that those involved were 13 years old.

• Police caught up with the suspect a 50-minute walk away from the school, Finnish broadcaster MTV Uutiset reports.
• One witness described seeing the ‘small’ and ‘hooded’ minor drop something to the floor before kneeling down as police arrived.

• The shooting took place inside one of the classrooms in the school, according to parents of students at the school.
• Terrified children called their families from inside the school, two parents of students told Helsingin Sanomat.

• The incident took place at Viertolan Koulu school in Vantaa.
• Students at the school are aged seven to 15 and are of both primary and middle-school age.
• In addition to its 800 students, about 90 staff work at the school.
• Finnish newspaper Helsingin Sanomat reported that the school is situated across two ‘teaching points’ – Liljatie Teaching Point and Jokiranta Teaching Point.
• Citing eyewitness reports, the publication reported that the shooting was likely carried out at the Jokiranta teaching point.

• The shooting took place at the Viertola school in Vantaa, just north of the capital Helsinki.
• Vantaa is Finland’s fourth biggest city with some 240,000 residents.

• The suspect in the shooting was a minor, police have said.
• The child was apprehended by police.

• At around 10.45am local time (8.45 GMT), the school principal announced that the immediate danger to the school was over.
