Former LSU defensive back Greg Brooks Jr. is suing the university and a Louisiana hospital claiming negligence in their treatment of a career-ending brain tumor, according to a lawsuit obtained by Yahoo Sports. Brooks alleged in the suit that he was left “permanently disabled” from the operation to remove the tumor.
The suit also alleges Brooks was told by LSU’s coaching staff that he could lose his starting role if he did not participate in practice as he dealt with various symptoms prior to the tumor’s discovery. It’s also alleged that LSU’s training staff, for a period of time, refused to recommend Brooks to a neurological specialist, according to the suit.
Brooks is now unable to walk and struggles to speak, according to his attorneys, and is likely to need lifelong care.
“While LSU cannot comment on ongoing litigation, Greg Brooks remains in our thoughts and prayers as he continues to work through the rehabilitation process,” LSU said in a statement to Yahoo Sports. “Since the beginning of our agreement with our Championship Health Partner, Our Lady of the Lake, they have provided exceptional medical care for our student-athletes in all of our sports.”
Brooks played at Arkansas from 2019-21 before transferring to LSU in 2022 and shining in the Tigers’ secondary. He played in two games during the 2023 season before the tumor was discovered.
“First, and foremost, our prayers remain with Greg for his continued healing and recovery,” read a statement from the hospital provided to Yahoo Sports. “Due to patient privacy laws and pending litigation, we can’t comment on specific individuals or situations. The neurosurgical team at Our Lady of the Lake is among the most experienced in Louisiana and they give our patients the best opportunity for a positive outcome in any circumstance. Providing excellent healthcare to those we serve is our top priority.”
