The band opened with their first single since the death of longtime drummer Taylor Hawkins
For their first SNL performance since the death last March of drummer Taylor Hawkins, Foo Fighters went with “Rescued,” their first single since their longtime bandmate’s passing.
The song is off of the band’s eleventh studio album But Here We Are, which delves into grief by “sorting through the fallout of what happens when things get completely unpredictable — when the people who have been threads in your day-to-day’s fabric get pulled out suddenly and cruelly,” as Rolling Stone‘s Maura Johnston wrote in a review.
But Here We Are is the group’s first album since 2005 with Dave Grohl on drums.
With Grohl as frontman on stage Saturday, behind the kit was Josh Freese of the Vandals and Devo.
Foo Fighters’ second performance was “The Glass” off of the same album, with H.E.R. joining on vocals and guitar.
Foo Fighters last appeared on Saturday Night Live on the late night show’s cathartic post-election episode in November 2020. Saturday marked their ninth appearance as musical guest.
The group will visit ten cities for their Everything or Nothing at All stadium tour next summer, with special guests including the Pretenders and the Hives. Also making occasional appearances are Mammoth WVH, Alex G, Amyl and the Sniffers, and L7.
