Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou expressed his frustration and ‘disappointment’ after his side were beaten 4-0 by Liverpool in their Carabao Cup semi-final second leg.

Heading into the clash at Anfield, Spurs had a 1-0 lead from last month’s first leg, but they were torn apart by Arne Slot‘s side on Thursday night.

Despite resisting some early pressure, Cody Gakpo put the Reds ahead to level the tie in the 34th minute – and from there it was one-way traffic.

Mohamed Salah scored a second from the spot just after half-time when Darwin Nunez was fouled by Antonin Kinsky, before Dominik Szoboszlai and Virgil van Dijk added the gloss on the victory to ensure Liverpool have the chance to defend their Carabao Cup title at Wembley next month by virtue of a 4-1 aggregate victory.

The Reds registered 26 shots during the clash, but Postecoglou‘s side failed to muster an attempt on target and barely laid a glove on their opponents.

The under-pressure Australian cut a dejected figure after another dismal day as he admitted: ‘They were too good for us.

‘It is disappointing because it is a great achievement to get to a final. We didn’t take the opportunity or give ourselves a chance to take that opportunity which is more disappointing.

‘I don’t worry about being judged and who is judging. My responsibility is to try and get the players I have to perform to the best of their abilities.’

Postecoglou also bemoaned his side’s failure to make the most of their first leg lead at Anfield and the Australian was also critical of his side’s display.

‘It was disappointing tonight because we had the opportunity to get to a final and they don’t come around too often,’ he added.

‘So to let that slip is disappointing. I was disappointed we didn’t play in the manner we wanted to.

‘We didn’t really give ourselves a chance with the performance. I set the team up to play the way we play every week. There were a whole manner of things we didn’t do.’

Spurs, who currently languish in 14th in the Premier League after losing 13 of their 24 league games, return to action on Sunday when they travel to Aston Villa in the FA Cup fourth round, while Liverpool take on Plymouth.
